Re: Ask!

Hey,

I have one question, which I don't think I've seen answered, and should have asked years ago:

Why do you think that KS had the effect on people that it did? Which elements and design decisions do you believe were the most crucial?

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

Hey, thanks for the kind words. I don’t think that you need to beat yourself up for missing the ‘Hanako’s clothes’ cue. I’m not even sure that it is a cue. People are messy, and the same signal can mean different things. Maybe Hanako chose those clothes because she wanted to look her best when wishin ...

Re: Shizune's route consensus over 10 years later?

I wrote up some thoughts on the route some time ago, which you might have seen (Shizune’s section is about halfway down): https://auricorange.wordpress.com/2021/01/04/the-emotion-whose-name-you-do-not-know-a-katawa-shoujo-retrospecive/ A22 responded here: https://ks.renai.us/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1 ...

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

Thanks for the kind words! Kama muta overlaps with a few other psychological constructs, like elevation, and “being moved,” so if you’re interested, maybe look into those as well. I also found the “Inspiration” literature fascinating and relevant, too. I’m glad you’re considering going back to Rin’s ...

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

The point of your blogpost was "game made me feel" and then you just summarized the game. It provides no new perspective, it is not insightful, it is not daring, and you don't even know what you're talking about. It's very obvious you wrote this for self-aggrandizement because every part of it that ...

Prof: What I meant to say is what I said in the piece. What I’m just now figuring out is why I wanted to say it. They're two different things.

Matty: Yeah, guess it'll take a while. OH WELL.

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

>I'm not just summarizing. What I am doing is, instead of letting the work speak for itself and allowing people to interpret it, I will give a play-by-play of everything that happens and tell you what you're supposed to think. What is important here is not YOUR experience, or THE experience; it is ...

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

Cloudx: Thanks for taking the time to read it. I certainly can’t say you’re wrong if you didn’t get much out of it. But I find it strange to say there’s nothing in there that you couldn’t get by reading the VN. By the second page of my word document, I’m explaining that KS triggers an emotion you pro ...

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

Hi Matty,

I originally intended it to be a video. People don't struggle to listen, so matters of difficulty never came into it.

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

>I admitted that I was wrong, but now I say that I was right and you are in fact wrong, because summaries are... the universe Everything you write is to reinforce the idea that you are smart rather than any kind of good faith analysis, so it is not worth my talking about. I admitted it was wrong to ...

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

I can think of many reasons you’d summarise a work to give someone the best of it. First, there are many works that are valueless save for one or two scenes deep inside them. Having those moments contextualised and explained is a far better experience than having to, say, first sit through 80 hours o ...

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

I answered A22 poorly the first time, without getting my thoughts in order. I’d like to acknowledge that he’s right: I didn’t think through my aims and wound up writing something very stupid. There are 3 cases when it’s worth introducing someone to a story by re-telling it yourself (“worth it” meanin ...

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

I largely agree. Again though; I rarely just summarised the biggest moments. I rewrote most, added my own anecdotes, and explained the underlying aspects that were not obvious but which made them more evocative. As for robbing people of an experience: I’ve been going around on that recently, and w ...

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

Please let me try again: The fact that KS evokes feelings is not the point. Almost everything evokes feelings: from every interaction, to every piece of media. Evoking feelings is not exceptional. But KS evokes a specific feeling: elevation. That alone is noteworthy; elevation is only rarely evoked ...

Re: Post-PhD, I spent a year writing this 60,000 word KS Essay

I don't get it. It took you a year and 60,000 words, and you just summarized the game and said it was sentimental. Hi 22, While I never imagined you’d like the essay, I am glad that you took the time to look through it. As for your words: while I appreciate you’re being deliberately reductive, I thi ...
