The multiplying can be altered by editing a line in the behaviors.xml file. Find this line: <Behavior Name="SplitIntoTwo" Frequency="200" Condition="#{mascot.totalCount < 50}" /> The first number (200) is at which rate they multiply and the second one (50) is the maximum amount of girls.

The OP's heart is in the right place though. It would be nice to have a site where you could get a direct download. I've had trouble getting friends to try it simply because they don't do Torrents. There are direct download links on the Katawa Shoujo homepage. It's below torrent, labeled "DDL".
